We have spent the past weeks talking about how to best build your immunity resilience in preparation for the coronavirus pandemic
Today our focus turns to our Naturopathic approach if you start experiencing cold or flu symptoms or think you may have coronavirus.
I asked Brooke Eberle, one of Mammoth’s consulting Naturopaths, what professional advice she prescribes if we do start getting symptoms…
“First of all I think it is worth identifying what the Coronavirus symptoms look like. This is important because as this virus spreads throughout our community it will be potentially difficult to know who actually has it, and who doesn’t.
Which is why all variations in severity of these symptoms should be taken seriously.
The Australian Government has advised that people with coronavirus may experience:
- flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat and fatigue
- shortness of breathThese symptoms of COVID-19 can range from mild illness to pneumonia. Some people will recover easily, and others may get very sick, very quickly.
Regardless of how mild your symptoms may be, you need to treat it as though it is coronavirus.
In terms of your responsibility to yourself, your family and your community, self-isolation is essential. Don’t leave the house. If you experience fever you need to call (ahead) your doctor immediately for medical assistance and direction.
The Australian Government has a free Coronavirus Australia app that I would advise you to download so you can keep informed on coronavirus, the symptoms and what to do.
There is also a National Coronavirus Helpline: 1800 020 080 you can call if your are seeking information on COVID-19. This line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A Naturopathic Approach
In terms of the lesser symptoms and how we can assist your immune system, we don’t know exactly what will target coronavirus specifically. We don’t have the studies to support treatment within the medical or complementary medicine fields as yet.
Though Naturopathically, I would always consider that I need to support your immune system, so that it can act according to the threat that it is facing.
So at this stage, we would approach the coronavirus in the same way as we would any other cold, flu or virus.
We have a range of tools that we know help to reduce the severity and duration of coughs and colds
We have herbs that we know interrupt other and target various viruses
So this is where I start…
1.Start Using Immune Stimulant Herbals – acute dose (stop immune building herbs for now)
When fighting a virus we want to move from immune builders to immune stimulant herbs to encourage our immune system to fight the virus.
When experiencing acute symptoms we stop using the herb, astragalus (immune builder) and start using andrographis, (our “big gun” immune stimulant), coupled with herbs such as echinacea, olive leaf amongst others in acute doses.
2.Vitamin C & Zinc immune nutrients – acute dosage protocol
We know that Vitamin C and Zinc are two important nutrients required to fortify immunity. They strengthen our resistance to infection and increased Vitamin C (acute dosage) has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.
3.Address Symptoms – herbals for coughs, upper respiratory symptoms
We have a beautiful range of herbs at our disposal that we can draw upon to target and provide relief from specific symptoms such as coughs and upper respiratory symptoms
4.Optimise gut microbiome immunity
Considering 75% of our immunity resides in our gut, we also call upon the specific strains of probiotics that build immunity within our gut microbiome.
5.Optimum Vitamin D levels
We know that Vitamin D is a potent regulator of immune responses against infectious diseases, so we always look to ensuring optimising Vitamin D status.
