Preconception Care – preparing for a healthy future

A baby’s health, growth and development is influenced by parental, and even grandparental  lifestyle, nutrition and health behaviours. And in the past, the focus has been primarily on maternal health. But conception involves both female and male partners equally, which is why it is equally important to support both parents in the time leading up to conception.

Optimal parental health gives your new baby the best start in life.

5 Fast Facts

Fact No. 1
You pass on traits or distinguishing characteristics to your children. Half of the traits, parents pass to children come from the father and the other half from the mother.

Fact No. 2
The man’s health is equally as important as the woman’s leading into and during conception.

Fact No. 3
In women, the egg maturation process occurs 3 to 4 months before she ovulates.

Fact No. 4
Sperm take on average 72-76 days to develop and mature before being temporarily stored prior to ejaculation.

Fact No. 5
Research has indicated that nutritional deficiencies, stress, illness, and toxin exposure, can all influence the health of the sperm and/or egg prior to conception.

Factors to consider during Preconception

Lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, toxin exposure, nutritional status and stress will all influence the healthy maturation of both the sperm and the egg. And considering it takes 2 to 4 months respectively for them both to mature, preconception care is ideally implemented at least 4 months before conception.
By addressing all these factors, you positively influence the health of your new baby not just during pregnancy but well into their future.

On our next Webinar, Healthy Preconception, Pregnancy and Beyond, our Naturopathic team will be discussing the crucial nutrients and lifestyle factors critical for optimal preconception care for both parents.
