Calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and iron phosphates are used for mineral supplementation.

Magcal Plus combines five phosphate minerals in a single tablet. When prescribed by a healthcare professional, it is generally well tolerated at the recommended dose and may be prescribed with confidence for infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly.

The easy-to-swallow tablet can be halved or crushed to allow for low-dose prescribing for infants and children.

PRESCRIBING INFORMATION
Phosphates are essential for many bodily functions, including energy production and regulation, neuromuscular function, pH balance, and the structure and function of healthy blood.

ENERGY PRODUCTION
The production and storage of energy in the body depend on both magnesium and phosphate. Phosphate is incorporated into compounds such as ATP and cyclic AMP. Magnesium stabilises the ATP molecule by forming the Mg-ATP complex, which is the active substrate for most ATP-dependent enzymes.

HAEMATOLOGY
As a component of haemoglobin, iron is essential for healthy blood structure and function and supports energy levels. Phosphate regulates iron phosphate absorption, forms part of ferritin (the iron storage complex), and is incorporated into 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), which regulates oxygen release by haemoglobin. Calcium also contributes to red blood cell production.

ACID-BASE BALANCE
The phosphate buffer system is a key mechanism for maintaining intracellular acid-base balance. Sodium monohydrogen phosphate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate act as efficient buffers under both acidic and alkaline conditions.

NEUROMUSCULAR FUNCTION
Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and phosphate are vital for nerve and muscle function. Working individually and together, these minerals help regulate cell membrane electrical polarity, neurotransmitter release at the synapse, and the contraction and relaxation of cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscles.

DOSAGE

  • Adults: Take 1 tablet twice daily with meals, or as professionally prescribed.

  • Children under 12 years: As professionally prescribed.

EACH TABLET CONTAINS

  • Sodium phosphate – dibasic anhydrous: 150 mg (elemental sodium 48.6 mg)

  • Magnesium phosphate: 25 mg (elemental magnesium 5.2 mg)

  • Calcium phosphate: 25 mg (elemental calcium 9.7 mg)

  • Potassium phosphate – dibasic: 25 mg (elemental potassium 11.2 mg)

  • Iron phosphate: 12 mg (elemental iron 4 mg)

  • Lactose: 220 mg

CAUTION
Caution may be required in some patients due to the sodium and iron content. Magcal Plus may interact with certain medications. Iron and magnesium can reduce the absorption and efficacy of some drugs.

Administer Magcal Plus at least 2 hours apart from:

  • Methyldopa

  • Carbidopa

  • Levodopa

  • Thyroid hormone

  • Penicillamine

  • Tetracyclines

  • Quinolones

  • Bisphosphonates
