The Secret to Thriving in the Season of Excess

The Festive Season is just about upon us which means the season of excess.

For many, the weeks leading to Christmas and into the New Year, are filled with lots of social functions to attend. Which are fun of course, and especially this year brings so much more meaning since we have been in lockdown for much of it.
But it also often means more exposure (and eating of) festive foods which are generally laden with yummy fat, sugar & salt.  Couple this with increased alcohol or soft drink intake, and we very soon tip over into excess eating and the physiological craving for more of this type of food.

Now I am the first to advocate a time for feasting because I believe it is a mark of a balanced, enriched life. The Christmas season is a traditional time for feasting and it is very important to preserve and practise our cultural traditions with family and friends.
Have you noticed that all major milestones, rituals and celebrations in our lives involve people special to us and festive food prepared with loving intention?

But the problem is not Christmas feasting per se; it’s the increased amount of rich festive food and alcohol we are consuming over the many weeks leading up to Christmas and then into the New Year and over Summer. If we are not careful, we will reach the end of the season with unwanted weight gain, digestive disturbances, compromised sleep, poor energy and lowered vitality.
This may be a pattern you recognize and have experienced before.

So how can you protect your liver, your digestive system and your energy levels so you can thrive and enjoy the Festive Season but still bounce into 2021?

Follow the 80:20 Guide

That is enjoy the festivities and all that this brings but balance this with healthy habits and routines and a little extra support for your body.

The idea of the Festive Season 80:20 guide is to support the body during the festive season. It’s not about avoiding social situations or not partaking in social indulging.

It’s about the 80:20 guide - eating well for 80 percent of the time and enjoying feasting and celebrating 20 percent of the time if you want to.

It’s about supporting the liver, alkalising the body and supporting the digestive system in a time of excess load on the body.
It’s about following healthy eating habits for the 80% to ensure that you getting adequate amount of the right foods to keep you healthy, vital and energised this Festive Season

Because here’s the thing… if you keep on doing the same things you can only expect the same results. If you want a different Christmas experience this year then it is up to you to choose to do things differently.

Extra Support for your Body in the Time of Excess Load

Here is 3 simple things to do for that extra ‘Festive Season’ support:

  1. Support your Liver

In the Festive Season, more often than not, your liver is burdened with an added array of toxins (alcohol, rich, fatty foods and sugars) that it needs to detoxify, render harmless and safely excrete from the body.
The problem is if we bombard our body with added toxins and we are deficient in the nutrients that help our body excrete these toxins, then our detoxification processes will be compromised. This results in toxins being stored in our tissues or being pushed back into our bloodstream causing fatigue, weakened immune function, poor memory, foggy head, lowered mood, sensitivity to foods and damage to our cells

  1. Support your Digestive System

Excess sugar and fat can totally disrupt our gut function and gut flora. Strains such as candida flourish on sugar which means it multiplies at a faster rate than other strains which causes an imbalance and symptoms.
It is important to supplement with a quality probiotic this time of year to keep our digestive system in check

  1. Alkalising your Body

Festive food and drink tends to be very acidic so it pays to stay alkalised this time of year. Alkalising or ‘balancing the pH of your body’ will provide your body with a level of nutrition that it can use to maintain optimum health and lots of energy and vitality. ‘Staying Alkalised’ can also enhance toxin excretion as well as prevent disease.

For Alkalising we can’t go past these
