Building Immunity Resilience

As the reality is setting in, that we are not actually at the finish line with the Covid-19 pandemic like we may have thought or wished. But really, we’re just ‘out of the blocks’ in this race with a long way to go. Many people are ‘struggling’ with this and you may notice even your own reactions can be quite negative and impatient.  With the high uncertainty we all face, it is normal to have heightened levels of stress and anxiety, as again, we hear reports in the daily news of increased community transmission.

We can feel that our efforts are quite futile against such an unforgiving virus.  But as a Community, we can make a difference by the collection of daily individual choices we make in the coming months. Social distancing precautions, handwashing and other personal measures like wearing a mask in public and reducing physical social contact, all significantly reduce the likelihood of transmission and ultimately the potential impact on our Community.

We also know the importance of a strong immune system and a nourished nervous system in the face of any virus. A compromised nervous system will undermine immunity and so it is time to refocus on these (see below) as we weather the coming weeks and months.
When we focus on factors, we do have control over as opposed to those external factors we have no control of, it can reduce stress and anxiety levels and carve a positive way forward where we draw upon our own resilience to continue to live our lives with purpose and passion.

Now is the time to Be Calm, to Be Kind to Ourselves as well as to Others and to still live life to the fullest… because it’s not a rehearsal, and Covid-19 will be with us for some time and so living a different, but beautiful life, is exciting and something to be cherished.

1.Immune Builders

Immune builders are those beautiful herbs that specifically support, nourish and protect your immune defenses and boost white blood cell production.
They include Astragalus, Medicinal Mushrooms (such as Reiishi, Shiitake, Cordyceps, Trametes, Maitake), Echinacea, Olive Leaf and Melissa

    2.The Essentials: Vitamin C & Zinc

Vitamin C and Zinc are the two most effective nutritional building blocks to fortify immunity.
They are rapidly utilised in the immune response to infection, making supplementation essential to support recovery and strengthen resistance to further infection. These essential immune nutrients are involved in virtually every step of the immune response to not only support healthy immunity but to reduce respiratory infections and promote healing and recovery.

    3.Optimize your Gut microbiome

A healthy gut is a major key to optimal health and wellbeing. There are proven strains of gut flora that boost resistance to infection. And considering your gut is responsible for 75% of your immunity it makes sense to have correctly balanced flora and an optimal and diverse microbiome.
Once your microbiome is optimised with a diverse and balanced microbiota it is equally important to feed these with healthy fibre or prebiotics from vegetables, legumes, whole grains, inulin, resistant starch and polyphenols.

    4.Identify your Underlying Immune-Depleters

There are three main things that can deplete your immune system:

    a) Stress

Stress, especially long-term chronic stress that we have adapted to can place a huge burden on our immune system. Whilst it is constantly stimulated to combat stress hormones it becomes depleted exposing your body to potential viruses.
Use Nervines and Adaptogenic herbs to protect and nourish your nervous system, whilst boosting and building your immune system.

    b) Food

Now is the time to incorporate lots of healthy salads and vegetables into your diet and start reducing processed food, sugars and alcohol which comprise your immunity

    c) Exercise

Exercise has shown to improve not only your mental and physical health, but also your immunity. Regular exercise (minimum 5 days per week) is essential for optimum immunity.

5.Get your Vitamin D levels checked

Vitamin D is a potent regulator of immune responses against infectious diseases. Low Vitamin D levels are associated with increased risk of viruses so it is important to know if you are prone to a low Vitamin D status and start supplementing if you need.
