The Healing Touch

Today I would like to introduce Laura Wilson, Mammoth’s newest consulting Naturopath, to share with you her amazing insights, expertise and passion for Naturopathy and how we use it to restore health.

Laura’s philosophy around healing and optimum health is all about incorporating small, fundamental and consistent changes to make a big, ongoing impact.

As I sit and chat to Laura about her philosophy around healing she explains,

“I start with the basics. What specific nutrients and minerals does the person sitting in front of me need. How can I support them as a whole… as physical, mental and emotional paradigms are all connected and influence health. I keep in mind that everyone is different, from genetics, to lifestyle, the way they handle stress, to the food they eat. I build upon each treatment digging into the latest research, understanding their individualised cellular processes, and utilizing their unique biochemical pathways to get results”

Laura was born in country Victoria and moved, with her family, to America when she was 5 years old.

I grew up in the mountains of Idaho, picking huckleberries in the bushes with my 4 brothers (yes I am the only girl!).

Laura has fond memories of her childhood, experiencing hot, dry Summers and freezing, snowy Winters. She loved the outdoors, riding her horses and getting close to nature.
Throughout her teenage and childhood years she travelled between America and Australia visiting family, which gave her the rare insight of experiencing both cultures.
After gaining qualifications and practising as a massage therapist after high school, Laura moved back to Australia in 2012 to specifically pursue a degree in Naturopathy.

“Massage was my gateway into natural health and natural therapies. As I was treating people with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, ankylosing spondylitis, scoliosis, PTSD, insomnia, asthma etc. I wanted to understand more about these disease states and how I could support them with natural medicines. I had two colleagues that were naturopaths and they both guided and inspired me to take further studies in naturopathy”

Laura’s passion lies in balancing women’s hormones, digestive health, neurotransmitter rebalancing and supporting people through cancer and chemotherapy.

My interest in women’s health developed after realizing the need for support for women and women’s hormonal health. There is so much natural health can do to support women of all ages in their journey. It is such a privilege to work with women and to celebrate their results.

Digestion is one of the body systems I go over with every person who walks through the clinic door. It is the gateway to mood, the microbiome, neurotransmitters, absorption of nutrients and minerals, and hormonal health. Optimising gut health is a pillar of wellbeing and is fundamental to good health.

Neurotransmitter rebalancing has profound effects on mood, mental health, sleep, energy, stress, allergies, and more. Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers released by nerve cells to send signals around the body. To put it simply, they are the stress hormones, happy hormones, sleep hormones, relax hormones, fertility hormones. They influence just about everything in the body such as movement, heartbeat & rhythm, to mood and mental health.
Her initial interest in neurotransmitter balancing stemmed from my personal issues with anxiety attacks as a teenager.

By studying neurotransmitters and their impact on our biochemical pathways, I now have professional insight, especially in mood disorders, anxiety, and women’s hormones.
There is so much that can be done to support these pathways. There are lifestyle and dietary influences that can modulate these chemicals, as well as specific supplements.
Therapeutically I look at utilising the nutritional cofactors and herbs to support certain pathways. Everyone is different so I make sure to take into consideration the person sitting in front of me, their diet, lifestyle, and genetics and I work with them to achieve their goals.

And finally, cancer and chemotherapy can be understandably quite scary for individuals and their families. Most people have been touched by cancer in some way and support is important for not only the individual but also for their family.

There is research to show that integrative medicine and treatment helps support people with cancer and I have a safe approach to aid in supporting the individual and or family members through chemotherapy.
There is a lot you can do to reduce side-affects, increase mood, increase energy, and improve quality of life through chemotherapy. I check all supplements to make sure they won’t interact with chemotherapy and utilise them wisely. For family members I focus on their stress, mood, and adrenal support so they have the resilience and wellbeing to support their loved one.
