Introducing Nervines for Optimal Brain Health

I have spoken a lot about adaptogenic herbs, especially this year, as these are the beautiful herbs that protect our nervous system and adrenal glands especially when we are exposed to acute or prolonged stress.
However today I want to talk about the beautiful nervine herbs, and in particular, the nervines that not only calm our nervous system but help keep our brain calm, focused and alert.

It seems poignant this year,  with many of us feeling tired and weary, and yet knowing we still need to maintain our energy and be mentally focused, think with clarity, and maintain a positive mindset to complete our work to the end of the year whilst still living amidst a pandemic.

And this is where the beautiful Nervines herbs can shine. These are the class of herbs that help nourish and calm our nervous system and more specifically there are a sub-class of nervines that support the brain by helping to decrease mental fatigue and increase mental focus and clarity.

Our Top 4 Nervines for the Brain

  1. Brahmi (Bacopa moniera)

Brahmi is my favourite herb for the brain. An Ayurvedic herb (Traditional Indian medicine), it helps with poor brain function due to nervous exhaustion. It is my number one herb to prescribe to those who have upcoming projects, presentations,  assignments or exams, where there is a lot of pressure and stress and yet you need to keep energised, focused and calm so you can perform at your best

  1. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Lemon balm is that beautiful, gentle herb that has the ability to calm your nervous system whilst maintaining cognitive function. It is used specifically when you are experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety around your current workload or the projects you are working on. Excess stress and anxiety can very quickly dampen your mood and so Lemon balm has those beautiful uplifting properties whereby it can elevate mood, provide clarity and focus so you can complete your workload efficiently and effectively.

  1. Gingko (Gingko biloba)

Gingko is indicated in the management of anxiety particularly associated with cognitive decline. Its potent central nervous system antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity contribute to its anxiolytic properties.
Using Gingko with Brahmi is a wonderful formula for optimum cognitive function especially when under high stress and anxiety. The combination is traditionally used to help the brain focus and retain information.

  1. Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea)

Rhodiola helps support mental performance when under stress. It is very rejuvenating and restorative and has been traditionally used to increase work productivity and endurance. It was once revered as a “gift of the spirits” but more recently research has revealed it a great protective herb to the nervous system with great anti-fatigue properties. Sounds like a ‘must-have’ for many, this time of year!
