How to Recover from a Gastro Outbreak

Have you suffered from “gastro” recently, or know someone that has?

You are not alone. There has been a spike in gastroenteritis infections of late where ‘the City of Greater Geelong confirmed that they had been notified of 13 outbreaks in private and council-run facilities in the first seven weeks of 2021’ (The Geelong Advertiser, Saturday February 20, 2021).

Gastroenteritis (or ‘gastro’) is commonly caused by viral infections and results in vomiting and diarrhoea. They are very easily spread from person to person.
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache and muscle aches.
Symptoms can take between one and three days to develop and usually last between one and two days, sometimes longer.
The main complication of gastro is dehydration which can be prevented if the fluid lost is replaced, ideally by electrolytes.
If you are concerned you should see your doctor.

Gastro Care 101

After the acute symptoms of gastro have abated, it is time to implement certain nutrients to reduce inflammation and restore the integrity of your gut. This helps in healing your digestive mucosa from the viral onslaught; ‘mopping’ up and preventing further damage from the infection; and supporting your immune system for a speedy and complete recovery.

Core Treatment of Gastroenteritis

Colostrum
Colostrum contains immunoglobulins that have antibody activity. Colostrum displaces gut pathogens and supports immunity

Lactoferrin
Lactoferrin helps curb bacterial growth and inhibiting the adhesion and invasion of bacteria in the gut. It also helps increase the proliferation of healthy microflora and assists in the restoration and enhancement of the microbiome

Saccharomyces Boulardii (SB)
SB is on of our favourite gut-supplements as it addresses digestive dysbiosis, including pathogens to restore a healthy gut environment.

Follow-up Treatment of Gastroenteritis

Probiotics
The highly researched probiotic strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Saccharomyces boulardii, and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis have demonstrated the ability to displace pathogenic bacteria, protect the existing good bacteria and encourage restoration of the microbiome to restore optimal function of the gut.
