The Gut and microbiome has certainly been an area of focus in both the medical world, the naturopathic world and the media in recent years as hundreds of millions of dollars is being forwarded to research in how the state of our microbiome affects our health or, in many cases, ill-health.
And for good reason… the future is exciting for both the prevention and treatment of innumerable health conditions as Science finally recognises a connection between chronic disease and gut dysbiosis, which supports the core philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine, that ‘disease starts in the gut’.
The human microbiome is the collection of microorganisms or bacteria (known as microbiota) that ordinarily exist in and on the surfaces of the human body. The majority of our microbiota however, reside within the gastrointestinal tract and make up approximately two kilograms of body weight.
Emerging research is increasingly highlighting the significance of the role of our gut and its influence on our mental health, our immunity, our weight, our metabolism and on disease prevention and treatment.
Evidence now links alterations in the gut microbiota to brain and neurological function, psychiatric symptoms, obesity, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, and autoimmune diseases.
Our Gut is only the First Port of Treatment
However exciting and important this move is to recognise that the gut plays an enormous role in our overall health, it is equally important to recognise that healing a compromised gut is only ever the first step to gaining back great health and vitality.
Unless we are addressing the causes that contributed to our gut problems in the first place, healing a leaky gut will only ever be a short-term solution to your symptoms.
More and More People are experiencing Gut Symptoms
We have noticed both in-store and in our clinics that more and more people have been struggling with their gut health and experience symptoms of bloating and diarrhoea. They have excessive gas or tummy discomfort and are reacting to more and more foods and no matter what they do, their symptoms seems to always return.
Stress, anxiety, excessive tiredness and exhaustion, hormonal issues and compromised immunity ensues as both physical health and mental health spirals down and life has lost its joy as it just becomes a struggle to get through the day.
If you can relate to this then it is vital you attend our next In-store seminar, where our consulting Naturopaths, Brooke Eberle and Amy Smith explore the many layers that contribute to poor gut health.
Brooke and Amy will unravel the mystery that there is always a multi-layered approach to achieving great health and vitality and that healing the gut is only ever the first step.
