There’s something missing – and I’ve been searching for it for a few years now. And to be honest, this has been frustrating because I’m very much an “action” person – I like to think of an idea, research it and implement it immediately.
So this journey I’ve been on, this internal struggle and search for the missing link, has taught me a good lesson.
It has taught me patience. It has taught me to think deeply. It has taught me to clarify my values and to not settle for anything that doesn’t fit those values.
And ultimately it has taught me to ‘sit’ with this uncertainty – this not knowing; in all its mess and discomfort and to be OK with that.
The lesson has been that great ideas, ways of thinking and behaviour change can take time – there are lot of false starts and a lot of time and energy that lead you down various paths. It is only with the benefit of hindsight that you realise many of them don’t fit with your vision and values.
But I’ve digressed…
Initially the missing link for wellness and living a “good life” remained elusive, but the more I took some time, the more I researched, the more I contemplated, discussed ideas and was challenged during those wonderful long-distance hikes David (hubby) and I made over the past few years, the more I have slowly been able to identify, clarify and articulate what “it” is…
And both David and I have spent 2016, flying to Sydney, surrounding ourselves with the best people in the field, learning and getting qualified so we could share this missing link with you.
And what’s more….we are about to Launch it in the next few weeks.
But before I go any further, let me back up and fill you in on the background of how we got to where we are now.
I have been at Mammoth Health for almost 17 years now and I am absolutely passionate about what we do. I live it and I breathe it and for those who know my story, complementary medicine was the key to my recovery from a life-shattering illness. However in saying that, statistics show that only 5%* of adults engage in the 6 Top Health Behaviours (Margaret Moore)
Top Health Behaviours
1. Regular Exercise
2. Healthy Weight
3. Eat adequate Fruit and Vegetables
4. Eat adequate Healthy Fats
6. Moderate Drinking
So that means 95% of adults are not engaging with these behaviours!
(*in the US, with Australia showing comparable statistics)
Closer to home, Geelong has an adult population of 160,000 and as a community we are not doing so well in the health and wellness stakes. According to research by Healthy Together Geelong 56% of us are overweight or obese and a whopping 95% of us do not eat the recommended 5-6 serves of vegetables per day. Over half of us drink alcohol at risky levels for our health and 19.2% consume sugar-sweetened drinks every single day. There are about sixteen teaspoons of sugar in a 600ml bottle of regular soft drink so that cumulative effect of sugar consumption over weeks and years is a serious problem. Fourteen percent or 22,400 adults in Geelong experience high levels of psychological distress including feeling nervous, hopeless, restless, sad and worthless and only 68% of us exercise enough daily.
You don’t need me to tell you the incidence of cancer, heart disease and diabetes is on the increase in Australia – where according to Diabetes Australia, 280 Australians will be diagnosed every day this year with diabetes. Ironically we live in a “24-7” connected world where we have never been more informed and/or educated about health, wellness, food, fitness, lifestyle, obesity and disease. Good information is everywhere and we can get it instantly – and yet as a society we’ve never been more overweight and unhealthy.
Therein lies the reason for my search… if we are more informed and educated than any previous generation, yet as a society we are becoming increasingly unhealthy and discontent what’s the missing link?
