It’s Terminator Time

The cold blast has seen both an onslaught of acute viral attacks both in-store and in our Naturopathy clinic.
These viruses are coming on fast. Symptoms are acute and recovery is slow.
The symptoms being reported are headache, sore throat, muscle ache, chest pain and coughing, runny nose, nausea, dizzy spells, nausea, general malaise, loss of voice and a persistent post-viral, dry cough.

Colds and flu are caused by viruses

Viruses are essentially strands of genetic material enclosed in a protein coat that penetrate, and literally hijack, susceptible living cells within 10 to 15 minutes of exposure. By exploiting cellular machinery, viruses such as rhinovirus, and influenza rapidly replicate and multiply, and then depart the cell to infect surrounding cells. Symptoms do not occur until the infection reaches a critical threshold; however, it is the inflammatory immune response to viral invasion, as well as the virus itself, that causes the familiar symptoms of sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, cough and fatigue of colds and ‘flu.

Even the healthiest among us may experience occasional viral infections, as viral strains are constantly mutating and easily evade immune memory and recognition.

The Mammoth Health Solution to Viral Attack

The trick to reducing the severity and longevity of any viral attack is to firstly stop the minute you start experiencing those acute symptoms.
This is probably the hardest thing to do in our “24/7”culture.
By stopping our regular routine and taking time out to rest, we’re allowing all our energy to be directed to the immune system which then fights off the virus.

Then we need to stimulate and support our immune system (which is working overtime), with key herbs and nutrients to help fight off the invaders.

Our top pick “Immune Boosters”

Andrographis paniculata

This is our” Number 1” immune herb and we get amazing results with it.
Andrographis or “Andro” as we call it, is an Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) herb which has a long history of use for bacterial and viral infections. It is useful for both treating and preventing viral illnesses by supporting immune resistance. In clinical trials, 6 g of Andrographis daily during colds has been found to be as effective as standard pharmaceutical antipyretic treatment for relieving sore throat and fever.5
Further, when compared to placebo, Andrographis significantly reduces the overall symptoms and length of respiratory tract infections.6

Echinacea angustifolia/purpurea

Echinacea is the most commonly known immune stimulant and modulator. If given in-high dose* for common cold and influenza-like syndromes, trials have shown it will lead to containment of that infection with shortened recovery period.
In a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 180 patients with upper respiratory tract infections received the equivalent of 1800mg per day or 900mg per day of E.purpurea root as a tincture or placebo. Patients receiving the high dose experienced significant relief of symptoms. Patients receiving the lower dose were not significantly different from the control.²

Olea europa

Or more commonly known as olive leaf has demonstrated broad antimicrobial activity which supports the traditional use of olive leaf for respiratory symptoms of coughs, colds, flu and sore throat. The active antimicrobial part of the herb readily enters the infected cell where it appears to interfere with the virus production and inhibits the replication of the virus³.

Vitamin C and Zinc

These two nutrients are the two most effective nutritional building blocks to fortify immunity.
They are rapidly utilised in the immune response to infection, making supplementation essential to support recovery and strengthen resistance to further infection. These essential immune nutrients are involved in virtually every step of the immune response to not only support healthy immunity but to reduce respiratory infections and promote healing and recovery.

It is available from the Naturopaths at Mammoth Health and includes Practitioner Only liquid herbs (tinctures) so you are getting the highest quality and most powerful supplement to support your recovery effectively and efficiently from Viral Attack!

With our “Terminator” Herbal Mix and a good quality Vitamin C and Zinc formula, you will be back on your feet in no time – and also without the risk of sliding into a post-viral malaise where the symptoms seem to hang around and don’t completely resolve, and you suffer needlessly for longer!

*Acute Dosage
The difference in treating acute symptoms with immune prevention and post viral support comes down to not only the herbs we use but the dosage.
In the acute stage of an illness we will dose at an acute level (i.e. higher dose several times a day), then drop back to a maintenance dose (lower dose, once or twice per day) for prevention and post viral support.

If you are under “Virus-Attack” pop in-store and speak to one of the Mammoth team to find out the best solution for you.
