I see a lot of New Year’s resolutions, goal setting and aspirations for the New Year. And like you, at the start of each year, I also think about how I’m going to be a better, healthier version of myself. I think about how I can achieve a little more balance with my life, not stress the small stuff so much, and try to live my daily life aligned to those things that are important to me.
I also see a lot of “gurus” undermine New Years resolutions… tell people that you don’t have to wait to the New Year, you should just change now (have you noticed there are a lot of “shoulds” in guru-speak?).
And of course, you can set goals and take steps to change in a positive way at any time of the year.
But there is something special about a brand new year… it’s like a clean slate… a whole year ahead full of the possibilities… a whole year ahead full of potential which is only really created by our daily choices.
That’s the wonderful thing about New Year’s resolutions – they are choices we make to become the best version of ourselves.
They are often made when we are relaxed, away from the hustle and bustle and stress of our normal everyday busyness and they are aspirational.
The hardest thing about resolutions though, is the committing and the doing. The planning of how we are going to fit these changes into our lives when we go back to our everyday work days, school drop-offs and pick-ups, shopping, caring, cooking… etc
One thing about making changes in our lives is that we are often contemplating about making that change for a while before we ever do anything about it. And we have often tried to make that change before but have not really succeeded in sustaining it.
But the beauty of making resolutions and changes this time of year is that we are at our most rested and relaxed so in this state we have the time to envision and dream of what we would be like if we were living our best lives.
The next step is committing
Every New Year’s Eve I celebrate with my closest and dearest friends… some of these friends I have known for nearly forty years. We may not see much of each other during the year, but we get together to celebrate the year that has been and the year that is to come.
This year was particularly merry with all of us very vocal and resolute on how were going to get fit, lose weight and gain strength.
With all of us now in our 50’s and some, in their 60’s, we are realizing how important it is to retain strength & fitness to prevent aches and pains, and to eat well so we can maintain energy, vitality and a healthy weight.
So before we knew it we had all made one commitment – we would do a summer “bootcamp” together to get us started. It was exhilarating making that decision together at the time… but interesting to see how many of us would follow through and turn up.
Last Monday was our first session… that means a 5.30am alarm for a 6am start down at Eastern Beach.
Wow, what a shock to the system after a week of glorious sleep-ins and lazy days.
And yes, every single one of us that committed on New Year’s eve turned up.
It’s interesting how when we make a commitment to each other, and publicly, we now become accountable to each other… and much more likely to honor that commitment.
There is something magic about exercising first thing in the morning, at the beach, with a group of supportive, like-minded people. For us it is the first step of becoming the best version of ourselves.
After the first week of boot-camp, coupled with the first week of being on “Mammoth Health’s Back on Track Challenge”, hubby and I feel wonderful… full of energy, positivity, strength and aspirations as we launch into our New Year eating well, moving well, focused with energy and vitality to embrace an exciting year to come.
Positivity, good decisions and a strong mind and body all start with the basics – eating well, moving well. Are you ready to join us and start living the best version of you….
