Are You Ageing Prematurely?

Ageing well is more than about taking a multivitamin and the food you eat. Anti-ageing is all about looking great and feeling great, having boundless energy and vitality at any age. Here at Mammoth Health as we are always actively seeking the latest research and science on Anti-ageing… on what keeps us looking great and feeling great and what best keeps our bodies from disease and ageing.

How Well Are You Ageing?

Have you ever thought about how well you are ageing? The following are ten areas we think are important to consider. Why not Take our Ageing Risk Test and see how you fare on the scale of healthy ageing.

֎ Do You Exercise More Than 4 Times Per Week?

There is no doubt that exercise keeps you looking and feeling young. It has been shown to improve mood, improve brain function, maintain a healthy weight, decrease pain and reduce depression. It has also been shown to reduce the risks of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, diabetes and dementia.
In line with current health recommendations we are all advised to undertake a minimum of thirty minutes of exercise or 10,000 steps most days of the week. Gentle to brisk walking is recommended because it is a convenient mild form of training. However dancing, biking, golfing, swimming etc are also fantastic forms of exercise. The trick is to find what suits you and do it!

֎ Are You Continually Stressed?

Stress is one of the major factors that compromise your health. Sometimes due to circumstances we can be under stress for a period of time. We can adapt to this new state of stress – it becomes our new norm. But it actually isn’t healthy and our body will be affected by it. It is important to firstly recognize if we are under stress and then take steps to manage this stress in positive ways. Exercise, meditation or yoga are great ways to clear our stress hormones. But reading a book, gardening, play golf, catching up with friends or taking a bath are also great positive strategies to diffuse stress.

֎ Do You Avoid Sugary Foods?

What you eat plays a major role in your quality of life and longevity. There has been a lot of media noise about our high consumption of sugar and consuming too much. And we support this view as eating sugary foods on a daily basis leads to insulin resistance, sugar addiction and weight gain. Being overweight increases your risk of developing heart disease, cancer and diabetes. It’s best to think of these foods as treats, to be indulged in and enjoyed occasionally.

֎ Do You Sleep Well?

Ensuring 7-8 hours of quality sleep most nights is integral to health & vitality. We all know how it feels after a shocking night’s sleep. Continued poor sleep leads to early ageing, memory loss, impaired brain function, low libido and weight gain. Avoiding coffee, tea, chocolate & cola after noon is the first step to a better night’s sleep.

֎ Are You Learning New Things?

It is now known that our brain grows and expands with activity and shrinks and atrophies with inactivity. The term for this relatively new science is called Neuroplasticity. It was once, not so long ago, thought that after childhood the brain was fully developed and what we ended up with was there for the rest of our lives. But according to new research into the neuroplasticity of the brain it has shown otherwise. We now know that our brain remains ‘malleable, changeable and modifiable throughout life’ – it can change its structure and function in a way that allows us to assimilate new information and experience, and use this information to alter behavior. By continually learning new things you can protect your brain from age-related decline.

֎ Do You Take Supplements?

Today’s hectic lifestyle takes a toll on our health and rarely are we able to eat the required nutrients for optimal health. Supplementing with spirulina, fish oils, magnesium, CoQ10 and resveratrol are a great way to ensure we are operating optimally and not just “getting by”.

֎ Are Your Hormones In Balance?

Stress, diet and environmental toxins can lead to hormonal imbalance leading to mood swings, fatigue and weight gain. By keeping your hormones balanced you keep your mood, energy and vitality levels optimal.

֎ Have You Found Your Passion In Life?

Many of us lose sight of our passions and interests as we grow older and everyday life gets in the way. Think back to your youth – what did you do for fun? Incorporate these back into your life along with your dreams.

֎ Do You Have A Positive Mindset?

Keeping those negative thoughts at bay will greatly improve your level of happiness. Positivity broadens our minds and opens our hearts. Did you know that people who show optimal happiness have a positive to negative thought ratio of above 3:1. I think it is very empowering to identify and live to our strengths and I’m fully embracing it. It is well worth the time and effort sitting down and identifying your own strengths.

֎ Do You Get Enough Sun?

As the colder weather approaches and our lifestyles become busier it may mean more time spent indoors which means less sun exposure and less Vitamin D produced by the body. If you aren’t getting 2-3 hours of sun on your face, arms and hands each week you are at higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency which impacts your immunity, weight gain, mood, hormones and risk of disease.
