After fourteen years of being in the Wellness Industry I have seen many who have had weight issues for most of their life, and essentially tried every diet, every magic pill, everything, it would seem, to try and lose weight… and they stay on track for a few weeks and then fall off the wagon and blame themselves – the guilt, the self-loathing, the feeling of helplessness and despair – and their self fulfilling prophecy of failure is reinforced.

But every time a new magic weight-loss pill is released they jump back on the wagon, I suspect to convince others (but mostly themselves) that they are trying; they are taking control. But inevitably they don’t really believe it’ll work because it never has before. And it doesn’t.  And the cycle of self-loathing, powerlessness and blame continues. Because they are not yet ready to acknowledge what it really takes to truly transform themselves and create lasting results!

What is so hard to watch as wellness educators, practitioners and supporters is that every time a customer latches on to the latest diet, pill, fad, they are becoming more and more disengaged with the real cause of their weight gain. I suspect that it is sometimes easier for them to starve themselves or take a pill than to honestly face the real reason for their weight gain… because essentially that means getting uncomfortable, changing a mindset, changing daily habits, addressing the issue of emotional eating and mindless eating, facing up to an unhealthy fast-paced lifestyle, being honest with themselves  about current relationships and most importantlyacknowledging that every day they will have to move – to get hot and sweaty and to get uncomfortable. Most would rather stay overweight, deprive themselves (usually short term) of food, self loathe and feel guilty than throw on some runners and get uncomfortable, get sweaty and make an effort for an hour or so…

So what becomes obvious is… what we eat, how we eat, the amount we eat and why we eat coupled with our lack of movement, will directly influence how and where our body  metabolises and stores energy (fat).

Toxins (from our food and environment), stress, lack of sleep and nutrient deficiencies will all impact our body’s fat metabolising pathways. Other physiological pathways including our “satiety system” (feeling of fullness), mitochondrial system (the cells the body uses to convert our food into energy), insulin production system and metabolism are directly influenced not only by the food we eat and the exercise we do, but also by the amount of stress we are under, the amount of sleep we get, the toxic load our body is under and whether the body has the right nutrients available at the time for them to work effectively.

So that simple mathematic equation of “energy in (food) should equal energy out (exercise)” is very simplistic. And we, as individuals, are anything but simplistic.

But what we do know, at the very basic level, is that the quality and quantity of food we eat, the amount of movement we do each day, the amount of stress we are under and the level of toxins we are exposed to will directly influence every cell of our body which in turn will directly impact the way we look, the way we feel and the way we age.
