An Introduction to Ayurveda
Ayurvedic Medicine is the traditional medicine of India. The word "Ayurveda" is a combination of two words: Ayu means long life and health and Veda means knowledge. Ayurveda is the science of how to create a long and healthy life.
Ayurvedic medicine is a healing system which promotes health using natural, nontoxic substances and which recognizes the important role of the mind and emotions. Ayurvedic wisdom is thought to have existed for over 3500 years and is fundamentally a system for maintaining health and curing disease through adherence to natural rhythms and cycles. It employs a variety of natural means to bring harmony to the physiology including diet, herbs, spices, minerals exercise, meditation and yoga.
The Three Doshas or Body Types
Ayurveda recognizes three primary life-forces or doshas in the body; Vata, Pitta and Kapha which correspond to the elements of air, fire, and water. When out of balance, the doshas are the the causative forces behind the disease process.
